Critical Appraisal Skills Programme

Referencing and Creative Commons

Referencing recommendation:

CASP recommends using the Harvard style, Harvard style referencing is an author/date method. Sources are cited within the body of your assignment by giving the name of the author(s) followed by the date of publication. All other details about the publication are given in the list of references or bibliography at the end.

Example:

Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (2023). CASP (insert name of checklist i.e. Randomised Controlled Trial) Checklist. [online] Available at: insert URL. Accessed: insert date accessed.

What are the benefits of referencing:

  • helps you to avoid plagiarism by making it clear which ideas are your own and which are someone else's.
  • shows your understanding of the topic.
  • gives supporting evidence for your ideas, arguments and opinions.
  • allows others to identify the sources you have used.
